Ice makers depend on four things working together: a steady water supply, a cold enough freezer, a working fill valve and a mechanism that harvests the cubes. When one fails, the whole machine looks dead, but the cause is often small.

Hard water is common in South Florida, and mineral scale is one of the leading causes of weak ice production, slow water flow and cloudy or small cubes. A failing refrigerator's cooling system can also show up first as an ice maker that stops producing.

Common ice maker problems

  • No ice at all, or a bin that fills far more slowly than it used to
  • Small, hollow or cloudy cubes
  • Ice that is fused together in one big clump
  • Water leaking from the dispenser or onto the floor
  • Ice that tastes or smells off
  • Machine making noise but not dropping ice

What we check on an ice maker

  1. Water supply and filter

A kinked line, a clogged filter or a failing inlet valve is one of the most common causes of poor ice production.

  2. Freezer temperature

Ice makers need a freezer well below freezing. If the cabinet is too warm, the real problem is the cooling system.

  3. Mechanism and sensors

We test the ice mold, heater, thermostat, motor and fill-level controls.

  4. Cleaning and scale

Where needed, we recommend a cleaning or descaling and a filter-change schedule that fits your water.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my ice maker stop making ice?

Check that the arm or switch is in the on position and the water line isn't frozen or kinked. Beyond that, the usual suspects are a clogged water filter, a faulty inlet valve, a failed ice mold heater or a freezer that isn't cold enough.

Why is my ice cloudy or full of small cubes?

Low water pressure, a clogged filter or mineral buildup typically cause small and hollow cubes. Cloudy ice can simply be air and minerals in the water, but a bad taste or smell calls for cleaning and filter replacement.

How often should I change the water filter?

Many manufacturers recommend every six months, and homes with hard water may need it sooner. Check your owner's manual for the exact interval.

Can you repair standalone, undercounter and boat ice makers?

Standalone units use a refrigeration cycle like a small fridge, which is our specialty. That includes undercounter ice makers in homes and on board yachts. Call with the model number, where it is installed and a quick description of the problem.

Is same-day ice maker repair available?

Same-day service is available. Call as early as you can and tell us what the appliance is doing, and we will let you know what is possible that day. Availability depends on our schedule and your location, and we do not promise a specific arrival window in advance.

Is there a warranty on ice maker repair?

Yes. Repairs come with a warranty starting at six months. Ask us about the details for your repair when we discuss the work and the cost before we start.

Need refrigeration repair? Tell us what's wrong.

Call or send a quick message with the brand, model and symptoms. For a boat, include the marina and slip. We will get back to you to talk through the problem and schedule a visit.
