Marine refrigeration is a different job from a kitchen refrigerator. The unit is built into cabinetry, powered by 12V or 24V DC, 120V shore power or an inverter, cooled by air or water, and battered by vibration and salt. A problem that looks like a bad compressor can turn out to be a weak battery bank, a loose terminal or a clogged condenser.
Broward and Palm Beach counties have some of the busiest boating waterways in the country, with marinas, boatyards and private docks along the Intracoastal Waterway in Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Boca Raton and the Palm Beach waterways. We come to the vessel, so you don't have to haul equipment ashore to find out what is wrong.
Signs your boat's refrigeration needs service
- The refrigerator or freezer won't hold temperature on battery or generator, but works on shore power (or the reverse)
- The compressor runs constantly, cycles on and off rapidly or clicks without starting
- Frost buildup, warm food or water in the bottom of the box
- Green or white corrosion on terminals, connectors, fittings or the condenser
- A fault light or error code flashing on a DC compressor controller
- An ice maker, wine cooler or beverage center on board that has stopped working
Compressors, refrigerant and sealed systems on boats
On a boat, the compressor, its controller, the condenser and the refrigerant lines are often tucked into a tight lazarette or engine space. Leaks tend to start at fittings, line connections and corroded coil surfaces. We locate the leak, repair it and recharge to the correct specification, rather than topping off a system that will lose its charge again.
Refrigerant work is done by an EPA Section 608 certified technician, using the refrigerant the system was built for.
On-board appliances and ice makers
Yachts often carry the same kinds of equipment as a high-end home: undercounter refrigerators and freezers, drawer units, ice makers, wine and beverage coolers. We repair refrigeration-based equipment on board, and you can call to ask about other on-board appliances.
Please tell us the make, model and where the unit is installed. We will confirm that we can help before we schedule a visit.
Marinas, docks and access
Some marinas and yacht clubs require advance notice, a dock pass or paperwork from outside contractors. Tell us where the vessel is berthed, the dock or slip, and any contact for access, and we will plan the visit around it.
We serve boats in marinas, boatyards and at private docks across Broward and Palm Beach counties. We are an independent repair company and are not affiliated with any marina.
How we diagnose marine refrigeration
Start with power
We check supply voltage under load, battery condition, wiring and connections first, because low voltage and voltage drop cause many marine refrigeration faults that look like a failed compressor.
Check airflow and heat rejection
A blocked or salt-fouled condenser, a weak fan or poor cabinet ventilation keeps the system from shedding heat. We verify airflow, and water flow where the system is water-cooled.
Test controls and the sealed system
We test thermostats, controllers and sensors, then look for refrigerant leaks and compressor condition, and explain what is repairable.
Repair, test and report
You hear the findings and the cost before we start. After the repair we confirm temperatures and operation, and point out corrosion or installation issues that could bring the problem back.

Frequently asked questions
Can you repair boat refrigeration that runs on 12V, 24V or shore power?
Yes. We work on marine refrigeration that runs on 12V or 24V DC, on 120V AC shore power or inverter power, and on units that switch between them. Call with the make, model and system voltage and we will confirm we can help before we visit.
Why does my boat refrigerator work on shore power but not on batteries?
Usually the compressor isn't getting enough voltage. Weak or undersized batteries, voltage drop in long or undersized wiring, loose or corroded terminals, or a low-voltage cutoff on the controller are all common causes. We test voltage at the compressor under load before blaming the compressor itself.
Is my yacht refrigerator low on Freon?
A sealed refrigeration system doesn't use up refrigerant, so a low charge means a leak, often at a fitting, a line connection or a corroded coil. We find and repair the leak and recharge to specification. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak only delays the failure.
How does salt air damage marine refrigeration?
Salt and humidity corrode condenser fins, fan motors, electrical terminals and refrigerant fittings, and a salt-clogged condenser can't shed heat. The result is long run times, high amp draw and eventual compressor failure. Cleaning, protecting connections and keeping the condenser airflow clear all help extend a system's life.
How do I know if the compressor or its controller has failed?
Many marine DC compressors have an electronic controller that flashes a fault code and can fail on its own, or shut down because of low voltage or high heat. We read the fault pattern and test the controller, compressor and supply before recommending a replacement.
Do you come to the boat, and can you work in a marina?
Yes. We come to yachts and vessels at marinas, boatyards and private docks in Broward and Palm Beach counties. Some marinas require advance notice or contractor paperwork, so tell us the marina and slip when you call.
Is same-day yacht & marine refrigeration repair available?
Same-day service is available. Call as early as you can and tell us what the appliance is doing, and we will let you know what is possible that day. Availability depends on our schedule and your location, and we do not promise a specific arrival window in advance.
Is there a warranty on yacht & marine refrigeration repair?
Yes. Repairs come with a warranty starting at six months. Ask us about the details for your repair when we discuss the work and the cost before we start.
